Bro, you are right about the Hadiths never being compulsory at all. If the Hadiths explain the Quran though, then yes I believe that it should be followed.
For example, there is a hadith that states that the rate of Zakat is 2.5%
Allah mentions Zakat in the Quran but there is no specified rate indicated. So we know through the hadith how much Zakat we should pay
I wish i knew Arabic I would spend a lot of time just browsing through the Hadiths for the pleasure of it.
The stories of Khalid bin Al Walid and Salman the Persian are interesting
